Admit It...
How many times have you sat in front of the television, watching commercials and thought to yourself, “I could do that!”? Perhaps you’ve secretly fantasized about being an actor at some point in your life. The beauty of acting in commercials is that you don’t have to live in Los Angeles, New York or Chicago or even be an actor. You, too, can make money in commercials.
And for those of you who are already persuing commercials, are you getting auditions and not getting callbacks? Or are you getting callbacks but not booking the job? The audition chapter will help you improve your slate, tags and make specific choices. |

"In a very concise and deliberate manner, René shares her years of experience in the world of TV commercial production. It is valuable recap for those looking to enter the business as well as those in the business. All the details and leg work that people do not know how to do or are too lazy to do is done for them." "After reading René Ashton's book on commercials, I have a new way of looking at the entire process. Her enthusiasm is downright contagious! Although I've been doing commercials myself on and off for almost twenty years, I was astounded at how much I learned from this book. It's everything you need to know from A-Z. A must have for any parent even thinking about getting their child into acting on camera of any sort. Run, don't walk!!! Dru Mouser, Actress |
Foreward by Thomas Calabro: (Melrose Place)
When René approached me to write the foreword for this book, I was attending one of her weekly “patio parties” (yes, in addition to her acting, writing and teaching skills she also makes time to be the hostess with the mostess), I was immediately dubious. “Why me?” I asked, “Commercials are not what I’m known for and certainly not the way I’ve earned most of my living. How could I possibly be the right person to do this?” I was met only by her sweet, very white toothed smile before she was whisked away by someone requiring a drink. I know her well enough to know at this moment she simply assumed her bidding would be done and that was that. I also knew her well enough to know there was a chance she’d forget the whole proposition by the time that drink was poured. So, I promptly forgot about it. But to my surprise, a week later, in response to pictures sent via email of that same party came an email from René: “Wow, you are so talented! You can write emails and my foreword all at the same time!” I laughed. I’d forgotten about her talent for tenacity. So, I gave it some further thought, and dang that girl…I changed my mind.
As an actor with very limited experience pursuing TV commercials, but over 30 years experience as a professional actor on various series and movies, I realized she’d coupled a perfect match for a book written to get both the newcomer started and also provide tons of useful tips for seasoned professionals. I gotta say…sometimes that René kills me with her keen intuition, especially when I don’t see it coming.
So, if you just arrived from Mars (or are an earthling with a dream to act, but haven’t), the book is strong enough to carry you through every step to working in television commercials. As you read, you will come to consider René your best and most fun friend, taking you on a new and exciting adventure - ‘cause that’s just how she treats the process! If you’ve been around as long as I have and are familiar with the road, there’s still plenty of tricks and tips sure to increase your commercial booking percentages (one absolutely priceless tip is on how to “slate” in Chapter 12). For both levels of experience, there’s plenty of other information: a nationwide industry resource list, interviews with casting and talent agents, definitions of industry terms, (half dictionary/half René’s experience - I’m sure you’ll enjoy discerning between the two), and more. René even includes a section on helping your child in the biz (cause she’s got one and knows a thing or two about that).
In closing, I’d like to say that more important than René’s choice for me to write this forward, is the Higher Power’s choice of René to write this book. What describes her writing describes the woman herself. Joyful. Personal. Informative. Funny. Insightful. Imaginative. Cheerleaderly (allow me to stretch the English language a little). Loving. These qualities make “Lights, Camera…YOU!” understandable and enjoyable to anyone, anywhere. To quote the author, (and you have to imagine her throwing both arms in the air when she says this), it’s “Fabulous!”

Quotes:
"Best auditioning book I have read by far!! In addition to the tremendous invaluable advice this book offers, the humor and wit the author René Ashton includes, gives me the joy and confidence I needed to dive back into auditioning."
Daniel R. Hugley (Amazon review)
"I absolutely loved Renés book. VERY well written and perfect for talent needing to know the ins and outs and everything in between. I believe she covered it all. I will definitely refer this book to all new talent and talent that need a 'refresher.'
Darlene McDowell, talent agent
Owner/Executive Director
DS ENTERTAINMENT SAG/AFTRA
"Lights, Camera, You written by Rene Ashton is a guidebook about making money doing TV commercials in Los Angeles or any other towns in the United States. It's great that the author is donating a portion of her book's sales to the Lili Claire Foundation. I have always wanted to be in TV commercials but never knew what I was able to do it. I learned more about the type of commercials that are out there on top what commercials I can possibly do or even have interest in participating. I learned about what I need in order to get started and I learned that I have some of those things already which made me several steps ahead of the game. I look forward to seeing what happens with trying this out. It also looks like it is a great way to earn extra money part-time."
Nicole Leon (Amazon review)
"If you can sell something, you can make money. "Lights, Camera... You!: Make Money Doing TV Commercials in Los Angeles of Any Town, U.S.A." is a guide to breaking into the world of commercials, an avenue that doesn't require a Hollywood residence, or even acting dreams. Written by a veteran of many commercials who has turned her success into a storied film and television career, there is much to learn for any television aspirant. "Lights, Camera... You!" is a top pick for any who want a taste of show business in their lives."
Midwesst Book Review (Amazon review)
"The author, René Ashton, has an amazing and inspirational personality and it shows throughout this book. I am grateful for all of the insider tips and information she shared with the reader. You will learn what to expect and what will be expected of you, what to wear to your audition, the difference in union and non-union commercials, and so much more. This book truly is priceless.
I am highly interested in getting my son into acting as he is interested in this field of work. With all of the fantastic information I read I feel my son will have a cutting edge in winning each part.
A big thank you to the author for making this possible"
Cassie Mae (Amazon review)
"Before meeting René, reading her book, and participating in her classes, I couldn't figure out why I wasn't being picked up by an agency. Now I realize that I was focusing on all the wrong things. As a young and upcoming actress in the competitive city of Los Angeles, there's a sense of complete helplessness. Quite frankly, it's terrifying to think about all the time, hard work, and money I potentially could have wasted had she not come into my life. Rene has not only well advised me, but has offered her advantageous wisdom. Since our meeting, irrefutable opportunities have been presented to me and I now feel more confident than ever as to what lies ahead in my career."
Jasmine Ayhala, actress
"For anyone seeking the limelight, whether it is commercials, TV, or movies, this is the book for you! "Lights, Camera...YOU!" offers an insiders look at the magic and mystery that is Hollywood, starting at a beginner's level. That's not to say that this material couldn't be used to spruce up a slightly tired routine, but as I am not a seasoned (okay, not even lightly salted) actress, I must speak to its usefulness at level one. With straight forward tips on everything from crafting your skills, to determining your "type", and the pros versus cons of having your own agent, author René Ashton holds nothing back. I especially love her candor in the way that her own personal moments are included within the material. It really helps to make it more accessible...feel more real. Let's not forget the listing of agents, talent sources, and casting sites at the books conclusion! What more could you ask for? Highly recommended to one and all..."
G. Reba (Amazon review)
"René Ashton shares an enormous amount of information with aspiring actors and actresses in her book, "Lights Camera You!" I was thinking my daughter would enjoy doing commercials; she loves to perform, so I picked up this book. It has EVERYTHING and I mean everything about acting in it. It gives advice, explains lingo, lists helpful websites, interviews tons of people associated with the industry and best of all gives her personal experiences.
It is great to read about something but it is every so much more helpful to hear a personal story. Ashton has been in the industry for a long time. I enjoyed reading her ups and downs and her advice. You can tell she has had many different experiences as she has explored the entertainment industry. She keeps the book light and interesting with her humor. She has stories and experiences every reader will laugh at, some at her expense. She uses her experiences to warn the reader. Her advice is priceless and I learned SO much from her. I highly suggest this book to anyone interested in the industry and as a pick me up for those already struggling trying to find the first step."Jennifer S. (Ball Ground, GA) (quote lifted off her Amazon review)
"René's commercial class was not only informative and fun, but I saw immediate results. I booked the first commercial audition I went on the week after I took the class. I would recommend the class to every actor I know."
Deena Dill, actress
“Within weeks of taking René's class, I started getting call backs and booking commercials. I never thought of myself as a commercial actor, but now, thanks to Rene’, I do.”
Ed Brigadier, actor
"I always have René coach me on all my commercial and theatrical auditions and I've booked WEEDS, COMMANDER IN CHIEF, a bunch of commercials like TARGET, SINGULAR, LOWE'S, TRIAMINIC, FORD, a STAR WARS PROMO and right now I'm up for the lead in a really big movie."
Marielle Carerra, child actor
“René’s one day seminar not only helped me double my callback’s, but I booked TWO commercials back-to-back (and I hadn’t booked one in THREE years).”
Christine Romeo, actress
"I would like to thank René for a GREAT commercial workshop. It was run very efficiently, time-wise, and covered all the important basics of commercial auditioning. The on-camera portion was VERY helpful - I was able to observe (and correct) something distracting I was doing that I wasn't even aware of. Plus, it was FUN! And my bookings have increased steadily since."
George Williams, actor
"Lights, Camera...YOU! has so much detailed information I was pleasantly surprised. I feel confident in getting into commercials. The book explains you do not need to have a perfect "10" movie star look; commercial producers are looking for every day looking people as well. People (potential buyers of the product being sold)can relate to every day people easier. Plus, I was happy to learn I do not have to move to Los Angeles or New York to get into commercials.
You will learn so many tips and even get information on how to contact different agents and casting directors! The author even gives you tips on what to do between jobs. She has thought of everything! This book is a must for people who want to get into acting on television commercials."Mick, Wisconsin (Amazon review)
"This book is written for me! Okay, so you too, but it really felt like the writer was talking to me while I read it. Actress, René Ashton, has a fun and sassy writing style that makes you feel as if you're getting insider tips from someone INSIDE the biz (commercial world) and it seems that she's done about a billion commercials (now every time I see her on TV, I go "oh, there's the author who shares her secrets!) I am impressed with how much she put out there and would think that other industry insiders would be shocked at how much she divulges.
As a mom who wanted to see how it is to get my kiddo into commercials, I wanted to attack this completely prepared. I didn't want to become one of those "stage" moms (if I could be so lucky, right?), and it had way more info that I expected. It's a whole world to learn, like a new language.
The author has seperated this mountain of information into 17 chapters including:
COMMERCIAL MARKETS (locations, etc),
HOW YOU FIT INTO COMMERCIALS (she gives examples and breakdowns, and she's right, they need all types, shapes and sizes),
HEADSHOTS (You will learn ALOT in this chapter - who knew a picture was so important),
RESUMES,
AGENTS,
INTERNET(there are casting sites on there),
PAYMENTS (explanations and breakdowns of industry terms and payment schedules),
UNIONS (and non),
WARDROBE,
AUDITIONS and more.
Another thing I really liked about this book is that she addresses my concerns about putting my child into commercials.
There are interviews with other industry insiders, so it's not just the writer's opinions and experience you're getting in this one. I'm very happy with my purchase, only now I feel like I have a LOT of work to do to get myself and my child ready to tackle this new venture. I will taking this book along with me as I go through the steps. Now, if she could only meet me and my son at an audition...
Becky Rose (Amazon review)
"I enjoyed the tone of your book - it reads just like having a conversation with a really smart girlfriend who can save you time and trouble because she's been there before. I will definitely recommend to my newbies."
Alicia Ruskin, VP Commercial Division of Kazarian/Spencer/Ruskin & Assoc. Talent Agency
"If you ever wanted to do anything to prepare yourself to be on TV, this is the book for you. I was amazed on the amount of information provided throughout the chapters. You'll get tips and tricks on what it takes from where to begin, who to contact, what to bring, where to look, and when to show up.
Throughout this reading you'll find ways to act in front of the camera. Change your voice tone to meet the needs of the part. Learn the new language you'll soon hear in the business. There are questions answered on why it may be better to be in the union. Find out about some of the benefits, like the pay scale, residual payments, or even health care coverage for you and your family. There's even a chapter on children and TV.
There is so much to know and learn and this book takes the fear out of it all. Rene Ashton, the author of this book took the guess work out for you. Anyone with determination and a dream will ear mark this book in several places. Thanks, I enjoyed it."
M. Stanhope, Chesapeake, VA (Amazon review)
"This is an excellent read for someone wanting to become an actor. René seems very real and genuine in her writing, as though she's your best friend giving you advice. The interviews with agents, headhunters, and studio execs are extremely interesting, and her detail-oriented information is very helpful. Great book!"
Laura Wheeler (Amazon review)
"This book opens with the question, "How many times have you sat in front of the television, watching commercials and thinking to yourself, "I could do that!"?" This immediately got me hooked, because too often, I've seen commercials thinking exactly, "I could do that!" However, I never really gave it a serious thought until I read, "Lights, Camera... You!" by René Ashton.
This book is written by a seasoned commercial actress. Not only does she do commercials, but she teaches seminiars about how to get involved and land commercial spots. She shares information and tips with readers, things that she didn't know when she got into the acting business.
Along with a wealth of information, "Lights, Camera... You!" contains an industry resource list and definitions of industry terms (and interpretations of the terms by Rene). This book also contains interviews with commercial agents and casting directors about what they look for in an actor.
After reading this book, I've decided to research the market in my area. I know it's a competitive business, but armed with the information in this book, it gives me a realistic view on what to expect when searching for commercial jobs!"Kat L. "crawling in and out of books"
(Jacksonville, FL USA)
"According to Rene Ashton, we are all capable of being in commercials. So if you have ever thought about acting with such stars as Tony the Tiger, Silly Rabbit, or maybe get a gig with George Jetson and Rosie in a Tums commercial, then this is the book for you. You will also find this book very interesting if you have ever wondered what it is like to be involved in the making of these commercials.
Rene takes us through the whole process of what it takes to start making ads for TV. She starts the book by giving us her qualifications. All she really would have had to do here was to tell us to look at the book jacket and I believe that most of us would have recognized here by the many commercials that we have seen her in. You will learn how to make a resume, get a headshot, find an agent and manager, and pretty much everything else there is to know about the business. And for those of you that would like to know how much money you can make, she also gives you the going pay scales. Rene gives us this insight in a very entertaining way and that makes this a very interesting read. The only thing I did not find out is when going for an audition, should I have the paper bag over my head facing with logo forward or aft, or maybe I will do as some people suggest and just try out for Halloween commercials."Rseifert (Amazon review)
